Obverse: Features a striking profile of General/President Dwight David Eisenhower facing left with the legend of “LIBERTY” above his head. Underneath his chin is the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” with the date at the base of his profile. Reverse: Reflects the design of the Apollo XI’s insignia. Depicted is an eagle flying over the surface of the moon with an olive branch firmly grasped in his claws with a small Earth turned so that North America can be seen. Thirteen stars surround the eagle’s flight. 1976 Reverse: Depicts the Liberty Bell in front of the moon. The Eisenhower Dollar was released into circulation in 1971. The Eisenhower dollar was the last dollar coin to contain a proportional amount of base metal to lower denominations; it has the same amount of copper-nickel as two Kennedy half dollars, four Washington Quarters, or ten Roosevelt dimes. Because of this, it, like its predecessors, had a cumbersome and excessively large size, leading to their short time in circulation. It was last issued in 1978. The Rarest of them All !! In 1971, the 1st year of issue, over 100 million coins were made for circulation at the Philadelphia & Denver Mint. But, only a fraction were made in silver and sold separately by the US Mint. And the rarest of them all were the Silver Proofs ( actually less than 4 % ). Let's put that into perspective ... with the US coming off the silver standard in 1970 it would have been news that a New "Silver" Silver Dollar coin was being issued along with the regular release "new" dollar. Yet the mintages were real small. Today the US Mint makes in excess of 20 Million Silver Eagles a year !! The Silver Proof Eisenhower was issued between 1971 and 1974. Each is in the original presentation lens as released by the mint.
